How To Keep Your Body in Balance for Better Health and Wellness

It seems like everyone is talking about finding balance. And for good reason. Maintaining a state of balance within your body can promote good emotional and physical health. It is a piece of wisdom passed down through generations, that we are just rediscovering. So, just how does finding balance help you achieve better health?

Understanding Balance Within Your Body

Your body is always seeking out balance within itself and with the surrounding environment. Just think of how you adjust to a hot or cold room. Homeostasis is the process by which cells (and all living things) naturally seek to achieve a state of balance with their surrounding environment. It involves multiple systems that move fluids, nutrients, and waste, in order to maintain equilibrium within your body.

Through a complex system of glands and organs, the endocrine system releases hormones that regulate bodily functions like blood sugar levels, stress response, metabolism, sleep/wake cycles, and reproductive functions. Anything out of balance within this system can lead to complications and larger health troubles. Luckily, adding a hormone balance supplement can help you maintain a balanced state.

The entire digestive system works to maintain balance in the body. Self-care has a different meaning for everyone, but they all revolve around taking the time and making the effort to focus on yourself and your overall wellness. Whether you choose to schedule a therapeutic massage or head to the beach for the weekend, they are both self-care. 

You should feel recharged, not depleted, after self-care activities. Find something that energizes you to find the best results in your physical and emotional health. And don’t feel guilty for taking care of yourself, because self-care is not selfish. It is an important part of your wellness routine. 

Eat a Balanced Diet

One way you can take care of yourself and help your body stay balanced is by eating a healthy and well-rounded diet. After all, you are what you eat, right? Instead of adhering to a strict diet that eliminates entire food groups (where’s the balance in that?), look to diets that promote whole, nutritious foods.

The DASH and Mediterranean diets are both perennial favorites of nutritionists and medical professionals. They encourage a plant-based eating style with a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. 

Schedule a Physical

One sure way to find out if your systems are in balance is to schedule an appointment with your primary care provider for an annual physical. Have bloodwork and a urinalysis done to make sure everything is good. If there are any irregularities, you can discuss how to resolve them with your doctor. 

If you have noticed anything unusual, be sure to bring that up in your appointment. Ask about what you should be doing to improve or maintain your health, and if there is anything you should keep an eye out for. Just don’t let a minor hiccup at your physical cause you undue stress and anxiety. Uncover the issue and find out how to fix it. 

Include Appropriate Exercise

Exercise is an important part of everyone’s lifestyle, no matter what your physical condition and ability may be. For the most part, you can let thirst guide when and how much water you will drink. Be mindful of sugary or calorie-dense beverages, and stick to water as much as possible. Try infusing it with fruits or cucumbers and mint to add some variety to your routine.   

Ancient health practices focused on maintaining balance within and between the systems of the body. Although modern science helps us understand these systems better, it is still good practice to heed the wisdom of traditional theories, at least where balance is concerned. It can help you realize better overall health, boost energy, and encourage a positive emotional outlook.
