5 Tips for Having the Best Rock Climbing Experience in Utah

Climbing has become a popular sport in Utah. An increase of indoor gyms and accessible trails have more and more people trying their hands at its many different forms. And those hands are taking a beating in the process. Luckily, there are some simple ways you can support healthy skin, even after a long day of climbing difficult routes. 

1. Use More Than an Ounce of Prevention

Hours outdoors doing any type of activity can take a serious toll on your skin. Climbing is no exception. The more preventative steps you take the better off you will fare. 

No one likes to watch as their skin turns red throughout the day. You know that the pain and stinging of a sunburn will continue to get worse before it gets better. The sun can be powerful on wide-open expanses of rock. Take steps to protect your skin from the sun when you are climbing. 

Cover as much of yourself with lightweight and flexible clothing. This will also protect you from scrapes and cuts as you climb. Skin that is exposed should have a generous amount of sunscreen to shield it from the sun. Look for a product with an SPF of at least 25 and reapply it throughout the day. 

The sun isn’t the only thing you need to protect yourself to form. Rocks can do some serious damage to the skin during a day of climbing. Using tape and chalk can help to secure your grip and reduce slipping.  

2. Find Relief for Chapped Hands and Sore Muscles

3. Build Your Resiliency From Within

Give yourself time to rest and heal, and try to get enough sleep. Most adults will need at least seven to eight hours each night, so start with that goal. 

Rock climbing is a great way to challenge yourself. It can also be really hard on your skin. While it may seem like extra work, it will make your outdoor adventures more enjoyable.
